Free Business Listings Every Small Business Owner Should Claim
Claiming free business listings on the right platforms helps customers find you and gives search engines confidence in your business. Here are the ones every small business should claim.

Getting your business listed on the major free directories is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your local visibility.
It does not require a big budget. It does not require a developer. And it does not require a complicated strategy.
But many small business owners either skip it entirely or claim a listing on one platform and stop there. That is a missed opportunity, because each of these directories feeds information into different parts of the local search ecosystem.
A consistent business listing on the right platforms helps customers find you, gives search engines confidence in your business information, and creates more paths back to your website.
Here are the free business listings I recommend every small business owner claim, and what to know about each one.
Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile is the most important free listing for almost any local business.
It is what powers your appearance in Google Search and Google Maps, including the local results that show up when someone searches for a service near them. A complete, accurate profile can help you show up for more relevant searches, give customers the information they need to contact you, and build trust through reviews and photos.
Take the time to choose the right primary category, write a clear business description, list your services with descriptions, add real photos, and keep your hours and contact information current. Google Business Profile is not a set-it-and-forget-it tool. Review it regularly and update it whenever your business changes.
Apple Maps
Apple Maps is often overlooked, but it matters more than many business owners realize.
It is the default maps app on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac, which means a large share of your potential customers are using it to find directions, call businesses, and view hours. Claiming your listing through Apple Business Connect lets you control how your business appears, add photos, update hours, and provide accurate contact information.
If you have ever had a customer say they could not find you on their phone, an incomplete Apple Maps listing may be part of the reason. It is free to claim and worth keeping current.
Bing Places
Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's equivalent of Google Business Profile.
While Bing has a smaller share of search traffic, it still powers local results for a meaningful number of users, including people using Windows devices and the Microsoft Edge browser. Bing also supplies listing data to other partners, so an accurate Bing Places listing can influence how your business appears in more than one place.
Claiming your listing is free. The setup is similar to Google Business Profile, and many of the same best practices apply: choose an accurate category, complete your profile, add photos, and keep your information current.
Yelp
Yelp is one of the most widely used review platforms, especially for service businesses, restaurants, and retail.
A claimed Yelp business page lets you respond to reviews, add business details, upload photos, and share information about your services. Even if you do not actively market on Yelp, customers may already be leaving reviews there, so claiming your page gives you control over how your business is represented.
Respond to reviews professionally, keep your business information accurate, and avoid any shortcuts around reviews. A steady history of genuine customer feedback is what helps your business over time.
Better Business Bureau
A Better Business Bureau profile adds a layer of credibility, particularly for service businesses where trust is a major factor in the buying decision.
Claiming your business on the BBB lets you provide accurate company information, respond to customer complaints, and show that you are willing to stand behind your work. Many consumers still check BBB before hiring a contractor, a home service provider, or a professional service.
A free BBB listing is a reasonable starting point. Whether you choose to pay for accreditation is a separate business decision, but the basic listing itself is worth claiming.
Nextdoor
Nextdoor is a neighborhood-based platform where local recommendations carry a lot of weight.
Small businesses that serve a specific geographic area can benefit from a free Nextdoor business page. It gives neighbors a place to recommend your business, ask questions, and share their experiences. Word of mouth still drives a large share of local business, and Nextdoor is one of the closest digital equivalents to that.
Keep your page updated with accurate hours, services, and contact information, and use it to engage with nearby customers when it makes sense for your business.
Yellow Pages
Yellow Pages may sound outdated, but the online version still receives traffic and can contribute to your business being found across a wider network of directories.
A free Yellow Pages listing lets you add your business name, category, contact information, and a description. It is not likely to be your busiest source of leads, but it is a quick, low-cost way to make sure your business information is consistent across another major directory.
Consistency matters. When your name, address, phone number, and website match across Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp, BBB, Nextdoor, and Yellow Pages, it reinforces trust in your business information across the entire local search ecosystem.
Claiming Free Business Listings Is the Easy Part
The platforms above are all free to claim. The work that actually makes them valuable is keeping them complete, accurate, and consistent over time.
That means:
- Using the same business name, address, and phone number everywhere
- Choosing accurate categories on each platform
- Writing a clear business description that sounds like it was written for a customer
- Adding real photos and updating them periodically
- Keeping hours, services, and contact information current
- Responding to reviews on the platforms where customers leave them
When your listings are consistent and complete, customers have an easier time finding and choosing you, and search engines have more confidence in showing your business.
